A Life Long Journey To Healthier

I have passed an incredible personal milestone. On Friday August 22, 2014 I celebrated an important two year anniversary. I started on a journey full of learning, failure, and discouragement in 2012 when I weighed over 470 pounds. I felt sluggish and I was not making progress losing weight despite my consistent time working out in the gym. I assumed there was a medical condition causing my heavy weight. I went to my doctor seeking the diagnosis for my problem. I was excited to finally have a finger to point blame for my problem and a condition to use to explain why I weighted so much.

As I sat talking to my doctor it became apparent that I was healthy with no problems. That was good news yet the smoking gun I was hoping for didn’t exists in the same way as I had hoped. My doctor told me that I was overweight and needed to make lifestyle changes. I’ve heard that said to me before, this time I listened to the words as they sunk in.

I don’t believe you. I’m only going to eat that way because you’ve told me to.

My life transformation began as I sat in a dietician’s office beginning my reeducation of how to eat correctly. I openly told her that I didn’t believe her when she said that if I ate 3300 calories a day that I would lose weight. On that August afternoon my journey began.

As part of my reeducation I needed to document what I ate everyday. I’ll be honest that the idea of logging everything I ate was overwhelming to say the least. The tool I chose to help me track my food was MyFitnessPal. Logging was critical because I needed to build an honest, truthful, and consistent habit with myself. I needed to own up and realize that I was the one controlling my food intake and that the choices I made each day impacted my long term health and weight loss.

My lifestyle changed as I logged my calories each day. I began to learn how to choose healthy calories to make each item I ate. I’ll admit that there were many moments when I became discouraged as my nutrition lifestyle transformed. In those moment I kept meeting with my dietician to seek encouragement to persevere when it seemed like nothing was happening. Over the last two years of my journey I have lost one hundred and ten pounds. I am amazed to be on this side of the learning curve. By the end of 2014 I plan on losing an additional 30 pounds and by the end of 2015 I want to find out what my maintenance weight will be. My journey has been wonderful and I hope you will find encouragement for yourself. If you have questions for me please leave a message as I would love to encourage you in your journey.
